WAWEL. RENAISSANCE: TAPESTRIES – CRANACH – CROWN TREASURY

An Evening at the Castle
May 20-23, 2021

SPECIAL OFFER | multimedia display | visiting exhibitions
“The Wawel Castle misses you, Dear Visitors, and everyday eagerly waits for each and every one of you. We are ready to welcome you with our WAWEL programme. RENAISSANCE – is a celebratory, renaissance-style reopening of the Castle after lockdown. It is also a unique and unrivalled offer. Literally. A kind of gift to our visitors. For we will see two temporary exhibitions: the monumental “All the King’s Tapestries. Homecomings 2021–1961–1921” and “Cranach at Wawel Castle”. Even today I invite you to see some masterpieces of a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, including the “Virgin and Child with Dancing Angels” – a famous painting that has never been shown publicly before and that was conserved recently at the Wawel Castle”, says Prof. Andrzej Betlej, Director of the Wawel Royal Castle.

The new temporary exhibition entitled “Cranach at Wawel Castle” that will be open until 24 October has masterpieces from the Wawel Castle collections and from Cracow Franciscan Friars and Wrocław Archdiocese Museum.

A new Castle's acquisitions will be on show at Crown Treasury exhibition.

In addition to the new exhibition the audience will have the opportunity to see the most important exhibition at the Castle, i.e. “All the King’s Tapestries. Homecomings: 2021–1961–1921.”

The 16th-century viewers were impressed with the tapestries’ sizes and the sparkle of gold and silver threads. The contemporary viewer standing before biblical tapestries will discern, among other things, references to the masters of the Italian Renaissance – Raphael and Michelangelo. Before us, there are 137 royal tapestries captivating with their exquisite craftsmanship. Among them are 19 monumental figurative fabrics depicting scenes from the Book of Genesis (Paradise Bliss – 189 in x 336 in, Animals Entering the Ark – 187 in x 312 in, The Building of the Tower of Babel – 190 in x 320 in), 44 tapestries depicting landscapes and animal scenes (An Otter with a Fish in its Mouth and Fantastic Reptiles, A Unicorn-Giraffe and a Lynx, Stork and rabbits), 42 armorial tapestries (a grotesque with coats of arms of Poland and Lithuania and the figure of Ceres) and also small furniture upholstery and fabrics for decorating window recesses. Visitors have never had an opportunity to see many of these before.

The visitors will also experience an encounter with art in a unique setting – beneath the stars. But there are more surprises in store: we will see the most important exhibitions at the Castle for only PLN 1 – on selected days and at selected hours. Don’t miss it out!
